Why do gear pumps have oil traps and solutions?

The gear oil pump has a simple and compact structure, easy manufacturing, convenient maintenance, and self-priming ability, but the flow and pressure pulsations are large and the noise is large. The high-flow gear pump must be equipped with a safety valve to prevent the pump or the prime mover from being damaged due to some reasons such as the blocked discharge pipe and the pump outlet pressure exceeding the allowable value.
For large-flow gear pumps to work smoothly, the coincidence of gear meshing must be greater than 1, so there are always two pairs of gears meshing at the same time, and a part of the oil is trapped between the closed cavity surrounded by the two pairs of gear teeth. This closed cavity began to decrease gradually with the rotation of the gear, and then gradually increased. The reduction of the volume of the closed cavity will cause the trapped oil to be squeezed and produce a high pressure, and squeeze out from the gap, causing the oil to heat up and cause the machine to receive additional loads; and the volume of the closed cavity will increase It also creates a partial vacuum, which separates the dissolved gas in the oil and produces cavitation. These will produce strong vibration and noise, which is the trapped oil phenomenon of the gear pump. Hazards: When the radial imbalance force is large, the shaft can be bent, the tooth tops contact the housing, and at the same time, the wear of the bearing is accelerated, and the life of the bearing is reduced.
The method to eliminate the trapped oil is usually to open the unloading grooves on the cover plates on both sides, so that when the volume of the closed cavity of the large-flow gear pump decreases, the left-side unloading groove communicates with the oil pressure chamber, and when the volume increases, it passes the right-side unloading The groove communicates with the oil suction chamber.
